Section 3: Essay Questions

Please respond to both essay questions in one Word, RTF, or Text document. Indicate your answer to the first question as 1.) and the answer to your second question as 2a.), 2b.), 2c.) or 2d.) depending on which option you select. Please double space and use 12 point font.

  1. In 250 words, please describe what you hope to gain by attending the conference.
  2. In no more than 750 words, please choose one of the following:
    1. Discuss the current state of either domestic (United States or your country of origin) or international (as reflected in United Nations Conventions) law regarding torture and how it could be changed or improved.
    2. Discuss the politics of torture either theoretically or as pertaining to a particular country or region of the world (e.g. South America, Southeast Asia, United States, etc.)
    3. Discuss the relationship between torture and gender and/or religion, either theoretically or by concentrating on a specific country or region of the world.
    4. Discuss an aspect of torture's permeation in the media and the cultural effect that it produces.
